How To Feel Confident In Front of the Camera
PLANNING YOUR SESSION
If you’ve booked your session for brand photos, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.
That’s totally normal. It’s an exciting step for you and your business!
But getting in front of the camera has a way of making our insecurities come out. And you’re probably wondering how to feel (and truly be) confident in front of the camera when that happens.
In preparation for your session, here are six things I recommend you do to get in your zone to feel confident, empowered, and fully yourself in front of the camera.
How To Be Confident In Front of the Camera
#1: Pamper Yourself
When it comes to the day of your session, you want to look and feel your best! Of course, feeling your best is personal to you and will look a little different for everyone.
When do you feel the most confident and comfortable in your own skin?
Maybe it’s when you have a fresh haircut, manicure, facial, spray tan, or a new outfit. Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself with a little pampering before getting in front of the camera.
You also want to pick outfits that make you feel fabulous and your best self. You want to stick to outfits that you’re confident and comfortable in. And if you’re stumped on what to wear for your brand photos, I’ve got you covered with my best tips for choosing the right outfits!
#2: Give Yourself Extra Time
The quickest way to kill the vibe as you head into your branding session is to have an overly packed day or to be running late to your shoot. If you’re worried about your schedule or stressed about the time, it will show!
I recommend clearing your schedule for the day of your session. Give yourself plenty of time for hair, makeup, and any other pampering you’ll be doing (see Step 1!). Assume that there will be traffic and, if you happen to arrive early, you can always hang out in your car and listen to some pump-up tunes to get yourself in the right mindset!
Which takes us to Tip #3…
#3: Bring Your Favorite Tunes
Music always helps set the perfect vibe. Don’t hesitate to bring your favorite Spotify playlist (I am currently loving the Mood Booster and Indie Rock Road Trip playlists) or some tunes from your favorite artist to pump you up and get you in the mood so that you can shine in front of the camera.
It’s okay to let yourself have fun during your shoot! The more relaxed you are and the more fun you’re having, the more confident you’ll be in front of the camera—and it will all come through in your photos.
So bring your favorite playlist, have a little solo dance party, and let your confidence & personality shine on camera!
#4: Be Open About Any Insecurities
Every single one of us has things about ourselves that we don’t love. It’s also easy to let that tiny voice in your head take over and let doubt creep in. And, while I can preach self-love daily, it’s not going to magically make any body image insecurities disappear.
This is why I’ve found it helpful to chat with your brand photographer about anything that might make you feel especially self-conscious. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but sharing what’s on your mind puts everyone on the same page and can help your photographer highlight the features you DO love about yourself!
#5: Libations (In Moderation) Welcome
Popping some bubbly or sipping your favorite wine can help to set a fun and relaxed tone during your shoot! And, let’s be honest, sometimes we all need a drink to ease our nerves. The key word here is MODERATION. A festive drink is a welcome way to loosen things up - but you don’t want to go overboard and have it show up in your pictures.
#6: Trust the Process
Even if you’ve never had professional photos taken, that’s okay! You don’t have to be a professional at being in front of the camera because you’ve hired a professional behind the camera!
Trust that you’ve hired the right photographer to guide you through the session. Then take a deep breath and enjoy your brand shoot—it should be fun! This is a big step for your business AND you, so cheers to the amazing future you are building!
